A boy and his sled dog battle the harsh Alaskan elements after a plane crash leaves the champion Eskimo sled dog Kavik stranded. Rescued and nurtured by young Andy Evans, Kavik is later reclaimed by his owner and taken to Colorado. The dog escapes and undertakes a 2,000‑mile journey back to the boy.

Kavik, a champion sled dog who had just won a race in Alaska, is sold for $4000 to George Hunter, a ruthless Seattle businessman with deep local interests. The plane carrying Kavik crashes into the snow-covered wilderness; the pilot is killed, and Kavik is left battered and near death.
The crash site is found by Andy Evans, a resourceful young boy living in Copper City. He struggles to get Kavik home and pleads with his parents to let the local doctor, Dr. Vic Walker, assess the dog. The doctor reluctantly examines Kavik, and the animal slowly recovers, forming a tentative bond with Andy.
Yet the dog’s trauma makes him wary of other dogs and quick to bolt when faced with company. Hunter returns on a routine trip, reclaims Kavik, and brings him to a kennel in his lavish Seattle home.
Seeing Kavik’s unhappiness, Hunter’s kennel manager, Mac, allows the dog to escape. Kavik stows away on a coastal ferry and heads north, learning to survive on harsh terrain, fending off other dogs and wolves for food. Barely clinging to life, he makes it back to Copper City and is joyfully reunited with Andy.
Hunter comes back, demanding Kavik’s return. Andy’s father, Kurt Evans, argues that Kavik would be happier with them than under Hunter’s control. After a tense standoff, Hunter sells Kavik to the Evans family, including Laura Evans, for a token sum.
