Barry Fitzgerald, born as William Joseph Shields on 10th March 1888 in Dublin, Ireland, was one of the most talented figures in the entertainment industry. Famous for his work in stage, film, and television, he earned high esteem in a career that spanned nearly forty years. He shone brightly in remarkable films such as ‘Bringing Up Baby’ (1938), ‘The Long Voyage Home’ (1940), ‘How Green Was My Valley’ (1941), ‘The Sea Wolf’ (1941), ‘Going My Way’ (1944), ‘None but the Lonely Heart’ (1944) and ‘The Quiet Man’ (1952). His work in 'Going My Way' awarded him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; he made history by getting nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the very same performance.

Fitzgerald's early life was spent in Dublin, Ireland, where he worked in civil service before his acting career. He started acting part-time until 1929 in Abbey Theatre and later became a full-time actor in 1929. He made his film debut in Alfred Hitchcock's version of 'Juno and the Paycock' (1930) and gained lasting fame in 1936 when he starred in the film version of 'The Plough and the Stars', directed by John Ford. Fitzgerald's work was recognized posthumously when he was listed at number 11 on The Irish Times list of Ireland's greatest film actors in 2020.
