On the 1932 voyage aboard the passenger ship S.S. Arcturus, Crusher McKay runs a tight, high‑powered ship that his crew both admires and fears. The ship’s doctor Doc Tony Craig has signed on in Shanghai for the San Francisco–bound leg, hoping to be near his former sweetheart, Ann Grayson. The tension between duty and romance threads through the voyage from the start: Crusher is drawn to Ann, but his bold, bumbling courtship soon clashes with the doctor’s own feelings, sparking a rivalry that colors every move aboard.

As the Arcturus cuts through the night, a sick Chinese stowaway is found hidden below decks, dying from Asiatic cholera. Doc acts quickly, injecting the crew and setting up sanitation procedures to stem the spread, but Crusher remains contemptuous of the measures. He is even tricked into taking the injection and, in defiance, orders a loud blowout in the engineering crew’s mess.
