Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock KBE (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English film director, producer, and master of suspense. Regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema, Hitchcock's career spanned six decades, with a filmography including over 50 feature films. Known for his mastery of suspense and visual storytelling, he became a common household name, thanks to his Interviews, television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955–65), and his frequent cameo appearances in most of his films. Despite never winning an Academy Award for Best Director, his films garnered a total of 46 nominations, including six wins.

Hitchcock entered the film industry in 1919 as a title card designer before making his directorial debut with the silent film The Pleasure Garden (1925). His first major success came with The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927), which helped to shape the thriller genre. Internationally recognized by the 1930s, he followed up with successful films including The 39 Steps (1935) and The Lady Vanishes (1938). In 1939, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood, where his success continued with Rebecca (1940), Foreign Correspondent (1940), and Suspicion (1941). Over the following decades, his productions included notable films such as Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960), and The Birds (1963). Hitchcock became a U.S. citizen in 1955 and was knighted in December 1979, a few months before his death.
