In 1874, the U.S. government presses deeper into Lakota lands, setting the stage for a struggle over land, power, and a secret gold that fuels much of the conflict. Mattotaupa, an Oglala Lakota man, bets on a fateful game with Red Fox in a dusty saloon. When Red Fox discovers there’s gold involved, he demands its origin; Mattotaupa refuses to reveal it, and Red Fox murders him in cold blood. The brutal act is witnessed by Mattotaupa’s son, the young and fearless warrior Tokei-ihto, who has little patience for White men or their intoxicating “Firewater.”

Two years later, [Tokei-ihto] has risen to war chieftain of the Bear Band and commands alongside Crazy Horse in the Great Sioux War. He raids a resupply column bound for a U.S. Army fort but spares the commander’s daughter, Katie Smith, delivering her unharmed to her father while signaling a chance for negotiation. The fort’s commander, Major Smith, rejects the peace overture and orders a forceful response. In a bold bid to disrupt the siege, Tokei-ihto and his warriors strike at the garrison’s munitions depot, turning a tense confrontation into a resounding Lakota victory and sending a clear message that the Bear Band will not be easily contained.

Victory is tempered when Red Fox arrives with a peace treaty, and the chieftain is sent to negotiate. The terms demand a reservation that would bind the Bear Band to a fixed future, and when Tokei-ihto refuses to surrender his people to that fate, he is imprisoned. The Bear Band is brutally forced to resettle, their homeland shrinking under government pressure, and the dream of a freer path for their people grows dimmer by the day.

Months pass and the war ends, but Red Fox continues to press his advantage. Katie Smith and her ally Adams intervene as Red Fox seeks to coerce [Tokei-ihto], threatening to unfurl the gold’s location. They advocate a path that would allow the chieftain to leave with his people for safety, even hinting at a move to Canada after a potential release. The chieftain agrees to listen to their counsel, choosing a route that preserves his people’s dignity even as he accepts federal terms.

Seeking spiritual sanction for the long journey, [Tokei-ihto] leads the Bear Band to the sacred caves of the Great She-Bear, their Totem and the mythical source of the gold. Red Fox’s henchman, Pitt, tails the chieftain, hoping to locate the treasure. A brutal encounter unfolds when the she-bear appears, fatally wounding Pitt after he fires a gun, and the chieftain returns with the she-bear’s cub, a symbol of continuity and resilience for the tribe.

With renewed purpose, the Bear Band begins their exodus, crossing the Missouri River in search of safety and a chance to rebuild. Red Fox presses the chase, offering a grim ultimatum—let the people move on undisturbed if Tokei-ihto remains behind—but the chieftain refuses to abandon his kin. After a prolonged clash, he defeats Red Fox in battle, killing the man who sought their gold, and the Bear Band finds refuge on the far bank, where they begin to craft a new life while holding fast to their traditions and the memory of those they left behind.
