Kaali, Rajinikanth, is a mysterious and deceivingly aged figure who takes on the job of a boys’ hostel warden at a college in Ooty. Inside this disciplined, intimate setting, a group of unruly final-year students dominates the dorms, led by Michael, Bobby Simha, the spoiled son of a local leader named Gnanam. Kaali keeps a steady, stern hand on the reins, putting a stop to Michael’s reckless antics and earning the enmity of the boy whose swagger seems to rule the place. Yet Kaali’s world expands beyond the campus walls when he forms a close bond with Anwar, an NRI hostelite who is in a relationship with Anu, the daughter of Mangalam, a pranic healer. Anwar’s sincerity and struggle to carve a path between two cultures catch Kaali’s attention, and a quiet trust begins to form between them.

Mangalam, Simran, is a pivotal figure in this tangled web. Kaali convinces Mangalam to accept her daughter Anwar’s romance with Anu, and in the process, the two women—Anu and Mangalam—become entangled in a delicate, evolving affection of their own. This shifting dynamic unsettles the college’s social balance and heightens the stakes for everyone involved. Michael, who harbors a possessive obsession with Anu, grows furious at the news of the relationship and tries to harass them, only to be thwarted by Kaali’s readiness and resolve. The tension thickens as Michael, already suspended along with his friends, witnesses Anwar record and share the humiliating treatment he and his gang faced. The video’s reach stretches far beyond the campus, catching the attention of Jithu, a local goon in Uttar Pradesh, and his father Singaar Singh, a powerful politician who sees the video as a threat or a message—and who responds with swift, lethal intent.

On another front, Singaar Singh, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, becomes aware of Anwar through the footage and a photo of Anwar with his mother Poongodi, Malavika Mohanan on Facebook. Singaar sends his men to kill Anwar for reasons that remain hidden to the public eye, escalating the danger. Meanwhile, Michael’s suspension leaves him hungry for retaliation, and he deploys his own henchmen to assault Kaali. The clash spirals into a broader confrontation, with Kaali defeating Singaar’s men and earning a renewed respect from Michael and his father figure, Gnanam, even as the weight of the past presses down on everyone involved. Anwar, shaken but determined, encounters Kaali’s friend who gradually unveils Anwar’s hidden history.

The revelations pull Kaali and Anwar toward a deeply buried past. Anwar is revealed to be the son of Kaali’s best friend Maalik, a revelation that reframes the present-day conflict in the light of old loyalties and broken promises. Kaali’s own backstory comes into sharper focus: his true name is Petta Velan, a respected figure in Madurai. Rajinikanth—as Petta Velan—appears in this shared history with a force that still reverberates through generations. Maalik, M. Sasikumar, loves Poongodi, and their union is not just a romance but a political and social act, especially given Poongodi’s family background and the opposition from Devaram and Singaaram, who are tied to an illegal sand mafia. The couple’s bond leads them to marry Poongodi to Maalik, a decision that receives the support of Poongodi’s father Rajapandi, J. Mahendran, and triggers a chain of violence rooted in family and community loyalties.

The past turns increasingly brutal as Devaram and Singaaram strike against Rajapandi and Maalik’s alliance. Devaram and Singaaram are killed as retribution, and Petta, in turn, kills Devaram and forces Singaaram out of the village. The revenge does not end with vengeance alone; Singaaram’s retaliation culminates in a bomb blast during Poongodi’s seemantham, a blast that kills Maalik, Saro, and seemingly Petta’s young son Chinna. Poongodi survives, and later gives birth to Anwar, who, with his mother, flees to Australia to escape Singaaram’s reach. The past’s scars become the present’s fuel, and Anwar’s birth marks a turning point that intertwines the fates of two families.

As Anwar’s life unfolds, he, Petta, and Michael’s henchmen set out to eliminate Singaaram, now known as Singaar Singh. They confront Jithu, who has been drawn into danger by Singaar’s influence, and they work to outmaneuver him. Jithu, played by Vijay Sethupathi, proves to be a complicated figure: his loyalties are tested as the truth of his parentage comes to light. The plot thickens as a cadre of Singaar’s agents attempts to kill Jithu, only to be thwarted by Petta’s crew via a decisive rescue.

In a final, dramatic turn, Petta Velan and his allies launch a bold assault on Singaar’s mansion, laying waste to his guards and forcing a confrontation with Singaar himself. The showdown culminates in Singaar’s death at Petta’s hands, and a chilling confession to Jithu—that the latter is not merely a son but the son of Singaar’s own blood, a truth Petta keeps concealed through a calculated ruse. Petta’s strategic gambit to use Jithu as a trap for Singaar reaches its apex as he holds Jithu at gunpoint, leaving the question hanging in the air: should he kill or spare him? The ending preserves the tale’s core as a meditation on lineage, loyalty, and the long shadow cast by a shared past, with each character tethered to a history that refuses to stay buried.
