Arul, the once-celebrated filmmaker, finds his career crumble after a bitter rift with producer Murugesan that leaves his latest project unreleased. The setback gnaws at him, driving him toward alcohol and a growing temper that turns the home into a fragile stage. His wife Yazhini endures the abuse, sometimes threatening to walk away, yet stays out of love.

In Chennai, Michael is an artefact dealer who is forced to marry Ponni, even though his heart belongs to Malarvizhi, a widow who views their union as something more casual than true love. Michael lays bare his lack of enthusiasm for the marriage to Ponni, making clear that his vows aren’t built on affection, while Malarvizhi keeps her distance, hoping for something more genuine than a convenient arrangement.

Yazhini keeps pressing Arul to seek Murugesan’s forgiveness and push for his film’s release, hoping for a return to a normal life. When Arul refuses, Murugesan himself steps in, demanding a hefty sum to unlock the project’s fate: ₹40,000,000 (about ₹58 million or US$680,000 in 2023). To fund the rescue mission, Arul’s younger brother Jagan and Michael, with help from their friend Ramesh, steal a temple idol and sell it for ₹4,00,00,000, hoping to line Murugesan’s pockets and free the film. Murugesan, however, plans a harsher path—he intends to reshoot the movie anew, this time with his own brother directing.

chaos erupts as Arul confronts Murugesan; Murugesan tries to kill him, but Michael intervenes, bludgeoning Murugesan to death. The act lands Michael in prison for seven years, changing the lives of everyone involved. Ponni gives birth to their daughter during the turmoil, while Yazhini retreats to her parents’ house and files for divorce, worn down by the alcoholism that shadowed her marriage.

Arul enters rehab, emerging two years later sober and determined to rebuild. He reaches out to Yazhini, hoping she’ll return, but she remains firm, her heart still tied to a different tomorrow. Meanwhile, Arul and Jagan bail out Michael, who travels to Ponni’s village in a bid to reconcile with her. Ponni wavers, torn between Michael and Jagan, but ultimately agrees to come back only if Michael breaks ties with Arul.

Murugesan’s widow and brother surface again, and a new deal to sell the production rights is struck for ₹2,000,000 (roughly ₹2.9 million or US$34,000 in 2023). To raise the money, Michael and Jagan scheme with Ramesh to steal another idol from a Kerala temple, but a drugged trap leaves Michael in trouble as Ramesh bolts with the loot. Michael is arrested the next morning, but manages to escape and return to Chennai, driven by loyalty and a complicated love triangle.

As the truth surfaces, Jagan confesses his own feelings for Ponni and reveals that he was willing to sacrifice Michael’s happiness to win her. Ponni, stuck between the two men, finds herself unable to decide and eventually returns to her village, while Jagan’s plan backfires in the shadows of love and deceit.

With production rights back in hand, Arul envisions a path back to Yazhini’s heart. She appears ready to forgive and reunite, but only if her fiancé, Vasanth, consents to their union. Yet the delicate balance of hearts remains unsettled as the past and present collide—until a final, brutal reckoning.

At a shop where stolen sculptures are traded, a drunken Jagan reappears, tormenting Michael with memories of Ponni. In a moment of rage, Michael bludgeons him to death and leaves the scene to face the consequences of his choices. The next morning, he is arrested but makes a daring escape and returns to Ponni’s village, where the web of loyalties tightens around the trio.

The darkest truth emerges on the rails: [Jagan]’s death catalyzes a deadly choice. Michael, Ponni, and their young daughter board a train, only for Arul to catch up at Palur and shoot Michael dead. In the aftermath, Arul texts Yazhini a final goodbye, feigning a relapse to spare her the stigma of being married to a criminal, and effectively ends their relationship.

In the stormy afterglow of these endings, Ponni and Yazhini find a hard-won, uneasy freedom. They stand together under the rain, but each experiences it differently: Yazhini watches the downpour in silence, while Ponni wades through it, letting the rain wash over her as a quiet, personal catharsis.
