Karthik Subbaraj (born 19 March 1983) is an Indian film director, producer and screenwriter who has become a distinctive voice in contemporary Tamil cinema. Raised in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he completed his schooling at SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School before pursuing a degree in mechatronics at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, where he also participated in stage shows and skits. His father, Gajaraj, an actor known for supporting roles in films such as Mundasupatti and Kabali, provided early exposure to the film industry. During his college years Karthik created the short film Kaatchipizhai, which earned selection in the Nalaya Iyakunar competition, marking his first foray into filmmaking and hinting at his later narrative sensibilities. His breakthrough arrived with the low‑budget thriller Pizza (2012), a razor‑sharp heist‑horror that achieved commercial success and was later remade in Hindi, Bengali and Kannada.
