Gopi leads a modest life as a well-respected tahasildar, comfortably supporting his wife and children. The routine is steady, but his wife, Padmavathi, remains unhappy and longs for a more luxurious lifestyle. She believes the family would be better off moving to the Persian Gulf to upgrade their fortunes.

One day, a stranger from the Gulf arrives in their town—a man named Johnny. The details of how he earns money there aren’t spelled out, but it’s clear he doesn’t lead a lavish life. At his wife’s urging, Gopi agrees to meet Johnny and discuss a possible plan to relocate. In Gulf circles, Gopi learns from Johnny’s perspective and later encounters another visitor from the Gulf, Ismail. From Ismail, Gopi discovers that typing jobs are not in high demand, as many companies prefer native Arabs over foreigners. Ismail’s father, a tailor, casually suggests that tailoring might actually offer better prospects.

Back home, Padmavathi pushes Gopi to pick up sewing so Ismail can help him secure a visa. The tailor’s business also hints at a shadowy, lewd side. One night, with the father away, Gopi finds himself entangled with the young daughter of the household; the moment ends with him being chased by a thief and then mistaken for the culprit as he flees. The police arrest him, but he is released after he is identified as the local tahasildar and taken to the hospital. The incident leaves him humiliated and stains his reputation.

Soon after, Sudhan, Padmavathi’s brother who has also returned from the Gulf, sets out the harsher truth: Gulf life is flexible about work, but it demands taking on almost any kind of job—often menial labor—to survive. This blunt reality contrasts sharply with the glamour his wife had imagined. The next day, a formal notice arrives—Gopi is suspended from his post due to the incident.

In a wistful, if not scathing, fantasy, he envisions himself as a coolie carrying Johnny’s luggage, this time returning from the Gulf while the world looks on. The ending presents him like a wind-up toy that drums whenever his wife presses the trigger, a stark symbol of a man who has always yielded to others’ demands. The final moment hints that Sudhan might secure a visa for next year, and Gopi could be urged to take up a manual job if required, underlining the precarious line between dignity and survival.
