Sabapathy Mudaliar is the pampered son of Rao Sahib Manikka Mudaliar, a wealthy socialite and local politician, and the darling of his mother, Thiripurammal. A laid-back fellow with a wry smile and little drive for study, he approaches life with a carefree charm that irks his teachers and disappoints those who expect him to mature. As he nears his Matriculation examination, he spends more time teasing his teacher, Chinnasami Mudaliar, and chasing small amusements than cracking open a book. The result is predictable: he fails the Matriculation, much to the chagrin of his worried parents.
In a bid to spark responsibility, his parents arrange a marriage with the intelligent and capable Sivakamu, hoping a strong partner might guide him toward a more productive path. After the wedding, Sabapathy Mudaliar moves into Sivakamu’s house with his loyal servant, but the new domestic rhythm soon clashes with old habits. Rather than studying, he enjoys a comfortable, flirtatious life at his wife’s home, letting distractions pull him away from the goal of education.
Meanwhile, a separate episode unfolds: the servant Sabapathy falls for Sivakamu’s servant, Kundumuthu, and the two clandestine hearts vow to marry. This romance within the household adds a parallel layer of humor and tension to the already charged domestic atmosphere. Seeing the chaos, Rao Sahib Manikka Mudaliar returns his son to the family home and places a practical demand on Sivakamu: help Sabapathy concentrate on his studies so he can complete Matriculation and perhaps even join Sivakamu in college someday.
With Sivakamu’s patient guidance, the study sessions begin to take shape. She patiently revisits subjects, creates a disciplined routine, and gently nudges Sabapathy toward curiosity and perseverance. The road is far from easy—comic missteps, stubborn resistance, and the clash between leisure and responsibility provide much of the film’s humor—but the underlying theme of education as a shared journey grows stronger. At last, Sabapathy passes his examination, and a heartening sense of triumph sweeps through the family. The servant Sabapathy, inspired by Kundumuthu and the new throughline of learning, also evolves, gaining knowledge and a new sense of self. In the end, both men acknowledge that a supportive partner is the best companion in life, and that love, humor, and schooling can blend into a hopeful, transformative path forward.
