Raj Kapoor as Raj Kumar is an honest, handsome, and intelligent young man who earns a living as a sole-trader painter, but struggles to make ends meet and cannot even pay the rent to his kind-hearted, chatty landlady, Lalita Pawar as Mrs. L. D’Sa. One day, Raj returns a wallet to its owner, Mr. Ramnath as Seth Ramnath Sohanlal, and his honesty earns him a clerical job in Ramnath’s office. Raj then meets Ramnath’s maidservant, Shubha Khote as Asha, and they fall in love. This romance runs into trouble when Raj discovers that Asha is actually Aarti Sohanlal, the niece of his employer, who had lied about poverty to win Raj’s money; Aarti is played by Nutan as Aarti Sohanlal.

Meanwhile, Mrs. L. D’Sa dies suddenly after consuming medicine manufactured by Ramnath. The post-mortem finds poisoning, and the police arrest Raj as the prime suspect. In the trial, Ramnath admits full responsibility for the tainted medicine, clearing Raj of the charges. Aarti tells Raj she promised Mrs. D’Sa she would take care of him, noting that he is “as big an idiot as the world is clever,” hinting at a possible future together.
