Govind Bali is a young sculptor who, during a vacation near the serene hills of Kullu, notices Lajjo and falls hard for her. Their bond deepens quickly, and they choose to marry in secret inside a small village temple, away from prying eyes. Soon after, Govind returns to the city to pursue further studies, while Lajjo discovers she is pregnant, setting the stage for hardship to come.

Tragedy strikes when Lajjo’s stepmother sells her for Rs. 500, and she is beaten. Sometime later, Lajjo gives birth to a little boy named Buntu. Years later, Lajjo makes her way to Mumbai to see Govind, carrying their one-year-old son. She leaves a letter for him at his doorstep, hoping to place the child with him, but she cannot bear to part with the boy and takes Buntu with her. They wander the streets, living off whatever they can scavenge, until tragedy deepens when she dies, leaving the child to face the city alone.

The film then follows the boy’s relentless city odyssey. He roams from place to place, scavenging food and even swallowing a pill that makes him sleep, his small frame pushed ever onward by need and curiosity. Govind, learning of these events through Lajjo’s Last Letter, the Aakhri Khat, realizes the gravity of his absence and, with the help of the police, sets out to find his wife and son. He reaches only the terrifically painful discovery of his wife’s body, a stark reminder of what has been lost. He also shows the police inspector Naik a statue of Lajjo that he has kept in his studio, a tangible memory of their life together.

Meanwhile, the little boy is rescued by a staff member from a nearby orphanage, though he escapes that place that very night. After a long period of wandering, with the aid of kind strangers, he eventually makes his way back home to confront the memories he carries. He returns to a house where a statue of his mother stands, and a new woman now acts as his mother, offering him a sense of belonging he had long sought.

The film’s warmth is amplified by a strong supporting cast, including Nana Palsikar, Tun Tun, and Mohan Choti, whose performances help illuminate the resilience and tenderness that thread through this story.
