David D’Costa [Amitabh Bachchan] leads a modest life in Madras with his pregnant wife Mary D’Costa [Jaya Prada], where devotion to the powerful MP Netaji Chaturvedi [Sadashiv Amrapurkar] shapes every choice. David worships the politician, even introducing Mary to him, and, with Chaturvedi’s blessing, the couple names their newborn son James. Life takes a sharp turn when David’s involvement in obstructing rail traffic lands him in trouble and he is arrested, only to be bailed out by his loyal friend Mahesh Shandilya [Anupam Kher]. Upon returning home, he confronts a devastating truth: Mary has died by suicide, leaving a handwritten note accusing Chaturvedi of rape.

The moment of truth is quickly silenced by a tangled web of protection and deceit. At the hospital, David’s efforts to expose Chaturvedi are thwarted by Police Inspector Roop Kumar Sahay [Dalip Tahil] and Dr. Varma [Bharat Kapoor], who reveal themselves as Chaturvedi’s allies. Sahay manipulates Mary’s note, pulling the threads of David’s life until the evidence against Chaturvedi dissolves. Dr. Verma burns the note, and the trio mock the devastated husband as the case collapses. Framed for Mary’s death, David is sentenced to twenty-four years in prison. Before his imprisonment, a furious but loyal Mahesh agrees to stand as guardian to James, urging him to shape the boy into a forceful future avenger.

Twenty-four years roll by, and the world has changed. In 1986, David is freed and seeks out Mahesh, only to discover a transformed life. Mahesh has renounced the old ways, living in wealth, and urges David to forget the past. The man he knew has renamed James as Vijay and raised him as his own son, without telling him the truth of his birth. Vijay grows up with a deep-seated loathing for criminals, becoming a dedicated police officer. The revelation crushes David, yet his resolve remains unwavering: he will avenge Mary’s death by targeting the three men who ruined him.

A tense encounter at a graveyard seals the personal stakes. David spots his son from afar and chooses silence, allowing the connection to simmer beneath the surface. Meanwhile, Vijay is drawn into a dangerous turn of events when Vinita Bhatnagar [Sridevi]—the daughter of DIG Ranjith Bhatnagar—becomes entangled in the case, complicating loyalties and love. Vinita’s relationship with Vijay places her at the heart of the cat-and-mouse game that follows, as David quietly stalks his targets while maintaining a dangerous distance from the boy he may have sired.

The plot thickens when David, posing as a church priest, visits the police station to glean information about a killer who plans to eliminate three people. Sahay is drawn into the moment, and a recorded conversation confirms David’s true identity for Vijay, who is listening in from a nearby room via a hidden mic. The tense confrontation ends with David overpowering Sahay, binding him, and a fatal pulley hangs him from the ceiling. Vijay, who witnesses the aftermath, is overwhelmed by the violent truth and the consequences of what his father has become.

News of these events travels fast through the halls of power, and Vijay reports what he knows to the police. Though he is determined to protect the other targets (Chaturvedi and Verma), the hunt intensifies as Vinita’s safety becomes a bargaining chip. David disrupts the security net by kidnapping Vinita and pressuring DIG Bhatnagar [Om Shivpuri] to surrender Verma, a demand Bhatnagar refuses on moral and professional grounds. David’s risky gambit puts Vinita in danger and sets the stage for a dramatic showdown.

The plan unfolds with a bold distraction. From a nearby rooftop, David triggers a false alert to draw security away, launching a final assault on Verma by shooting him through his window. Vijay races to intervene, but the killer escapes, and the chase shifts underground as the two sides descend into the maze of pipes and manholes. In the claustrophobic tunnel, the two men collide in a life-and-death duel. Vijay, once more resolute in his duty, manages to corral David and extract him from the underground lair.

Chaturvedi, watching from a distance, ridicules David’s schemes and praises Vijay for “saving” him—yet the confrontation is far from resolved. In a shocking turn, David produces a pistol and shoots Chaturvedi, ending the MP’s tyranny in a final, chilling moment. The city’s political grip loosens as the dust settles, and the film closes with Vijay standing beside his father, the two sharing a quiet, complicated bond that sits at the heart of this tale of vengeance, legacies, and the ever-present pull of family.
