Set against the Sino-Indian War of 1962, a small platoon of Indian soldiers in the rugged hills of Ladakh becomes the focus of a tense, high-stakes stand. Captain Bahadur Singh [Dharmendra] is a keen, capable leader who shoulders the burden of guiding his men through a treacherous terrain and freezing weather. When Brigadier Singh [Jayant] travels to Kashmir and Ladakh, he learns of creeping encroachment by Chinese troops and orders Major Ranjit Singh [Balraj Sahni] to deploy officers to secure the vulnerable posts along the frontier.
The region remains disputed, with China insisting on its claim while Indian troops are instructed not to fire first. That rule gives the Chinese an early advantage, allowing them to press their attacks while the Indians must hold their fire. Surrounded and outnumbered, the platoon is forced to retreat under brutal conditions that complicate every move. Captain Bahadur Singh works tirelessly to shepherd his men to safety, choosing calculated risks over panic and paying a heavy personal cost as he fights to keep his unit together. The action is intense and methodical, yet intimate in its focus on fatigue, resolve, and the quiet courage of ordinary soldiers.
Amid the clash, Bahadur Singh’s life takes on a personal dimension. In the long marches and snow-mattered nights, he falls in love with Angmo [Priya Rajvansh], a Ladakhi woman whose presence offers a humane counterpoint to the violence surrounding them. The captain also acts as a mentor to Angmo’s brother Sonam, guiding the boy’s dream of someday becoming a soldier himself and teaching him what it means to serve with honor.
As the fighting intensifies and the weather worsens, the platoon makes a final, determined effort to retreat to safety. Bahadur Singh makes a selfless choice that enables his comrades to pull back, sacrificing his life in the process. The losses are heavy, and the film portrays not only the battlefield’s dangers but the emotional toll exacted on those left behind—the families, the lovers, and the fellow soldiers who carry on after theheroic acts.
Throughout, the film balances stark frontier warfare with intimate, human moments: the warmth of shared conversations by a fire, the hopeful gaze toward a soldier’s future, and the steady, protective presence of a leader who puts others first. The result is a story that honors the bravery of those who fought in a harsh, unforgiving landscape while underscoring how love, duty, and sacrifice can intertwine even in the darkest hours.
