Robert Reiner, born March 6, 1947, is an esteemed American actor, film director, screenwriter, and producer. He first gained nationwide recognition with his performance as Mike "Meathead" Stivic in the CBS sitcom All in the Family (1971–1979), earning him two Primetime Emmy Awards. His diverse acting portfolio includes films such as Throw Momma from the Train (1987), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Reiner's directorial debut was with the well-received mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (1984). He is lauded for directing numerous genre-spanning films like the romantic comedy The Sure Thing (1985), coming of age drama Stand by Me (1986), and psychological thriller Misery (1990). Reiner's film A Few Good Men (1992) was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Reiner's early life was in a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York, where he embraced the arts from a young age. He honed his writing skills for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968 and 1969. He made waves by brilliantly portraying Michael Stivic, Archie Bunker's liberal son-in-law, on Norman Lear's 1970s sitcom All in the Family. This role brought him immense popularity and even led to him winning two Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe nominations. From 2012-2018, he also had a recurring role in New Girl. His directed films under his company Castle Rock Entertainment, like When Harry Met Sally... (1989) and The American President (1995), have also received widespread acclaim. Reiner also continues to act in supporting roles in both films and television shows, emphasizing his dedication to the craft.
