Michael Makeshift is a lonely, sad man who can’t get over the breakup with his fiancée. He attends a string of support groups to meet people and seek genuine connection, hoping to replace the silence of his days with a sense of belonging. On top of his emotional strain, his landlord keeps pressing for long-overdue rent, adding constant pressure to an already fragile life.
On his doorstep arrives his brother, Reggie Makeshift, newly married to Valeri Carboni. Reggie asks Michael to look after his wife, a request that spirals into a tangled, awkward situation. Valeri wakes up at Michael’s apartment after Reggie left her there drunk and unconscious, leaving both of them to navigate an uneasy arrangement and the surprising pull they feel for one another.
Valeri does not know that Reggie has paid Michael for the favor, while he claims to be handling some business. Disoriented at first, Valeri slowly warms to Michael, drawn by his quiet sincerity and the protective manner in which he treats her, even as their shared secret creates an unusual bond between them.
Meanwhile, Reggie’s long-shot plan to rob the local credit union where his mother works begins to crumble. His henchmen mutiny and force him to admit that the unsuspecting Valeri is carrying the security codes they need in her suitcase. A tense chase erupts as Michael steps in to help Valeri escape, and he seizes the chance to reveal the full truth about Reggie.
As danger closes in, Valeri grows more attached to her new protector, and the pair must rely on each other to stay ahead. They spend a tense night in Michael’s dad’s now-closed hardware store, a temporary sanctuary that’s soon discovered by Reggie’s men. With little time to spare, Valeri and Reggie are driven toward the credit union in a high-stakes sprint.
In the end, the henchmen are arrested and removed from the immediate danger. Reggie and Michael are released, and the evolving relationship between Michael and Valeri culminates in a heartfelt kiss, signaling a fresh, hopeful chapter for both of them.
