In this light, brisk road comedy, Michael MacCreigh needs $15,000 to finance a new play and makes an outrageous bet with his wealthy Uncle Carlton MacCreigh: if he can leave New York City with no clothes or money and reach Los Angeles in 10 days, arriving in a fresh suit with $100 and a new girl, he wins; if he fails, he quits theater and goes into the meatpacking business. The stakes are high, the plan is audacious, and the clock is ticking.
The bet kicks off in chaotic fashion when Michael is dropped off in Central Park in nothing but his undergarments. There, he crosses paths with Paula Gilbert and her fiancé Jackson Wallace, and in a flash he snatches Wallace’s tux. With quick thinking and luck, he swaps the formal wear for a World War I soldier’s outfit and to his surprise is picked up by Paula and her Aunt Aunt Charlotte while hitchhiking.
The two women are 渡 from New York City’s social-register circles, now pinned down by dwindling fortunes as they head toward Los Angeles. Paula’s plan is bold and perhaps reckless: she intends to marry Jackson Wallace for his money and leave for two years in China, a journey that would secure her future. The arrival of Michael—disguised in uniform and reckless charm— threads a new possibility into Paula’s plans. Yet Aunt Charlotte is wary, worried about Paula’s financial security and the havoc of a long, unpredictable journey.
As the trio travels west, Michael’s various schemes begin to generate cash, and Paula finds herself drawn to him beyond the bet. The mood shifts when two escaped convicts ambush them, robbing the group and threatening their precarious arrangement. Paula quickly realizes the truth behind Michael’s bold wager, and disappointment threatens to undo any budding trust between them.
Against the odds, Michael arrives in Los Angeles just in time, even collecting reward money for capturing the fugitives, a small victory that softens Paula’s initial disillusionment. The journey forces a reckoning: Paula forgives him for the deception, but she also makes a practical demand—he must join his uncle’s meatpacking business after all, tying up the wild bet with a new, sober direction for his life.
Throughout the odyssey, the story blends go-for-broke ambition with a comic, winding road to self-discovery. The California finale brings both reconciliation and a pivot toward a more grounded future, as the characters navigate love, loyalty, and the consequences of bold bets gone awry.
