What's After the Movie
Mary Woronov, born December 8, 1943, is a widely recognized American actress, writer, and figurative painter. Her renown primarily emerges from her affiliation with Andy Warhol and her participation in Roger Corman's cult films. Having appeared in over 80 movies, Woronov has shown her acting prowess on both stage and screen, featuring in Lincoln Center and off-Broadway productions along with impactful roles in American TV series like Charlie's Angels and Knight Rider.
Born in Palm Beach, Florida, she later moved to Brooklyn Heights in New York City at a young age. She realised her knack for art at Cornell University and soon befriended artist Gerard Malanga. This was a key turn of events that led her to be involved with Andy Warhol's art studio, The Factory, in New York City. In the 1960s, Mary appeared in numerous films for Warhol, becoming a Warhol superstar, and dancing with Exploding Plastic Inevitable, Warhol's multimedia spectacle. Her ostensible connection with Warhol has been equated to the bond between Lancelot and King Arthur and her robust personality at The Factory is memorable.
Her journey through the art of acting and cinematography extended further with her roles in several films directed by her then-husband, Theodore Gershuny. By 1973, she had clinched a Theatre World Award for her performance in the Broadway production of David Rabe's play Boom Boom Room. Her infamous role in the Roger Corman-produced cult film Death Race 2000 in 1975, and her relocation to Los Angeles in 1979, marked notable events in her acting career. She showed her dexterity through appearances in an array of films, such as Blood Theatre (1984), Night of the Comet (1984), and Chopping Mall. Her enthrallment with the punk music scene got her an interesting cameo in Suicidal Tendencies music videos. Woronov continued to be in the limelight with her roles in the animated Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), Rob Zombie's horror film The Devil's Rejects (2005), Ti West's supernatural horror film The House of the Devil (2009), and the black comedy splatter film All About Evil (2010).
