Jane Russell

Jane Russell (born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell on June 21, 1921 in Bemidji, Minnesota) emerged from a modest Midwestern upbringing to become one of Hollywood’s most iconic sex symbols of the 1940s and 1950s. After her family moved to Southern California, she studied drama with Max Reinhardt’s Theatrical Workshop and took acting lessons from Maria Ouspenskaya, which prepared her for a seven‑year contract with Howard Hughes in 1940. Her breakthrough came with the controversial film The Outlaw (1943), a project that delayed release for censorship battles but vaulted her into national fame thanks to the daring promotion of her figure. Russell’s measurements and statuesque height made her a favorite pin‑up for World War II servicemen, and she leveraged that fame into a versatile career that spanned acting, modeling, and a brief but notable foray into singing with the Kay Kyser Orchestra and Columbia Records in the late 1940s. Throughout the 1950s she headlined major studio productions such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) opposite Marilyn Monroe, The French Line (1954) with its provocative bathing‑suit number, and the Western The Tall Men (1955) alongside Clark Gable, solidifying her box‑office drawing power. In parallel she co‑founded Russ‑Field Productions with her first husband Bob Waterfield, producing films like Gentlemen Marry Brunettes and supporting her own creative control. Beyond the screen, Russell was a devout Christian who founded the Hollywood Christian Group, championed international adoption through the Waif program she created in 1955, and became a vocal supporter of the Republican Party. Her later years saw sporadic television appearances, a Broadway stint in Company, and a dignified retirement in Santa Maria, California, where she died on February 28, 2011, leaving behind three adopted children, numerous grandchildren, and a lasting legacy as a trailblazing actress, model, and singer.
