In the Arizona desert, a car breakdown flings New York socialite Amanda [Jane Russell] Lawrence into an unexpected ride with Jonathan [Jeff Chandler] Dartland, a driven mining engineer, and his friend Hugh [Dan Duryea] Slater, a doctor who enjoys a splash of liquor. They’re whisked to a resort party hosted by Amanda’s wealthy mother, and what begins as a social whirl quickly shifts into something deeper: Amanda and Dart fall in love and marry, despite the initial reluctance of those around them. Amanda’s mother is not pleased to learn that Dart’s late mother was an Apache princess who once lived with a Boston professor, reclaimed her Apache name, and now never sees her son. This family history colors the couple’s world from the start, setting up a clash of backgrounds that will test their bond.

Dart moves to Lodestone, working for Ernest Tyson [Robert F. Simon], where the mining culture is wary of outsiders—and largely hostile toward women. He wants to reopen the abandoned “foxfire” shaft, convinced it hides a legendary vein of gold. Amanda adjusts to Lodestone’s rugged life, navigating the meddling of Mrs. Mablett [Charlotte Wynters], the wife of the mine superintendent Jim Mablett [Barton MacLane], and the curious gossip that swirls around a town where women are scarce. Despite the rough surroundings, Amanda finds herself valued and purposeful, even as Dart’s single-minded focus on the foxfire project leaves him seemingly blind to the possibility of a family.

Rumors and jealousy fuel the town’s whispers. Maria [Mara Corday], Hugh’s nurse, makes little effort to hide her attraction to Amanda’s husband, and her insinuations help fan a growing sense that Amanda might be unfaithful. Dart remains tight-lipped about his background and ambitions, and Amanda discovers a locked footlocker that hints at a past he keeps carefully hidden. She asks questions, and his resentment grows, complicating trust between them.

In an effort to prove himself and support the project, Amanda convinces Tyson to back the foxfire venture, but the move backfires when Dart’s pride is bruised by the decision. Seeking understanding, Amanda turns to Dart’s mother for answers about his stubborn adherence to an older code—she learns that his ideas of love are filtered through beliefs that love can be temporary and that a father may not acknowledge a son until he reaches a certain age. The truth, however, is clouded by misperception: Dart, misled by Maria’s stories, begins to suspect Amanda of a tryst with Hugh.

When Amanda returns, their argument crescendos. He is intoxicated and accuses her of infidelity, while she explains the reality of their rift. He later expresses remorse, yet a battered communication gap persists, and she sharply accuses him of treating her “like a squaw.” > like a squaw

Tragedy then strikes as Amanda suffers a dizzy spell and miscarriage, a sorrow that compounds their strain. Dart, unaware she was pregnant, tries to visit her in the hospital but heeds Hugh’s admonitions and does not press the matter. Heartbroken, Amanda plans to return home with her mother, feeling sidelined and dismissed by the very man she loves.

The foxfire project reaches a pivotal moment at the shaft. Many miners refuse to continue after a seizure, but Dart resolves to push through the superstition. He descends into the shaft, the ground giving way around him; the collapse injures his hands but uncovers the vein of gold he sought. Anxiously informed at the airport that Dart has been hurt, Amanda rushes back just as he admits that the mine’s ordeal has shown him he needs her—and that he is no longer afraid of love.

Back on solid ground, a renewed sense of purpose anchors the couple as the mine is rebranded. A new sign proclaims the Foxfire Gold Company, marking not just a financial victory but a rekindled bond between Amanda and Dart as they step forward together into a future shaped by forgiveness, trust, and shared risk.
