Marco Torino, Luther Adler, is the gypsy king of southern California and is terminally ill, shaping a fate that hinges on succession. He hopes his younger brother will take the helm, but Stephano, Cornel Wilde, is more drawn to the world of dance than to leadership, setting up a quiet tension at the edge of a dwindling life. To secure the transition, the ailing Marco arranges a marriage between Stephano and Annie Caldash, Jane Russell — another gypsy whose family stands to gain from the alliance.
Annie Caldash’s father, Theodore, Joseph Calleia, and her brother Xano, James H. Russell, watch with wary eyes as the plan unfolds, torn between tradition and the lure of a lucrative dowry. Annie herself hatches a scheme: her father’s dream of a rich dowry from Stephano’s clan, followed by a swift escape before the vows can truly bind them. She cajoles Stephano into a bone-deeply ironic ruse — a staged wedding in which Annie will pretend to faint at the ceremony, the family’s greed spotlighted, the dowry split, and the lesson taught to those who crave wealth over loyalty. But as the plan progresses, it is Stephano who ends up being duped, because Annie goes through with the marriage.
Meanwhile, Stephano leaves with Velma, Helen Westcott, seeking work in seedy dance clubs, and he soon begins to feel the absence of Annie. He returns to the gypsy camp, only to discover Marco and Annie together, surprisingly content and at ease in each other’s company. Fearing a new swindle, Stephano voices his anger, but Marco clarifies that these are the last precious days of his life, not a conspiracy. The revelation softens the moment, and a decision settles over the camp: Stephano will assume the role of the new gypsy king, with Annie as his queen, weaving a fragile future from a web of family loyalties, desire, and the intimate acceptance of life’s final chapters.
