The Pre-Production Fitting Session

A wardrobe call, more commonly known as a fitting, is a critical pre-production appointment where an actor collaborates with the Costume Designer and the wardrobe department to establish their character’s on-screen look. This is far more than a simple tailoring session; it is a key creative process where the visual identity of the character is defined. These fittings are scheduled well in advance of the actor’s first day of shooting.

During the wardrobe call, the actor will try on a variety of costume options that the designer has either custom-made, purchased, or rented. The designer presents their research, concept sketches, and a clothing “rack” that represents their vision for the character. The actor provides feedback on comfort, movement, and how the clothes make them feel in character. This collaboration is essential for creating a wardrobe that is not only visually compelling but also serves the actor’s performance.

The Purpose and Process

The wardrobe call serves several vital functions:

• Establishing the Look: The fitting is where the final decisions about a character’s outfits are made. The designer, often with input from the director, will select the exact pieces that will be worn in each scene.
• Alterations and Tailoring: The wardrobe team takes precise measurements of the actor to ensure every costume piece fits perfectly. Seamstresses and tailors are often present to pin and mark the clothes for any necessary alterations.
• Continuity Photos: Once an outfit is finalized, the actor is photographed wearing it from multiple angles. These photos are compiled into a “costume bible” that the wardrobe department and script supervisor will use on set to ensure perfect continuity from day to day.
• Functionality Testing: If a character needs to perform a stunt or any significant physical action, the fitting is the time to ensure the costume allows for the necessary freedom of movement.
