A wet-gate 8K scan is a premium archival film scanning technique that uses a fluid bath to conceal physical scratches on the film base, combined with ultra-high resolution to capture maximum detail.
When archives and studios undertake the restoration of a classic film for a new 4K UHD release or for long-term digital preservation, they often turn to a wet-gate 8K scan as the ultimate method for capturing the original film element. This process combines two powerful techniques to produce the cleanest and most detailed digital master possible.
Film is a physical medium that is susceptible to wear and tear. Over years of handling and projection, a film print can accumulate countless small scratches and abrasions on its clear plastic base. In a standard ‘dry’ scan, these scratches scatter the scanner’s light, showing up as bright white or dark lines on the final digital image.
A wet-gate scanner solves this problem in an ingenious way. The film passes through a chamber, or ‘gate,’ that is filled with a specialized, inert fluid. This fluid has a refractive index that is nearly identical to that of the film’s celluloid base. The fluid fills in every scratch and scuff, and because the fluid and the film now bend light in the same way, the scratches become optically invisible to the scanner’s sensor. The result is a dramatically cleaner scan, free from the majority of base-side scratches. The fluid then evaporates harmlessly from the film’s surface.
An 8K scan digitizes the film frame at an incredibly high resolution (roughly 8192 x 6020 pixels for a 35mm frame). This is significantly higher than the 4K resolution of the final product. This oversampling is critical for several reasons:
