Overview

Vinegar syndrome is the autocatalytic breakdown of cellulose acetate film. As the base hydrolyzes, it releases acetic acid—vinegar odor—that accelerates decay. Symptoms include shrinkage, channeling, warping, and crystal deposits, complicating transport through scanners and risking irreversible damage.

Triage and Handling

Affected reels are quarantined to prevent cross-contamination. Cold, dry storage slows progression; vented cans, molecular sieves, and acid-scavenging inserts can reduce headspace acidity. Archivists measure shrinkage; above certain thresholds, sprocket-driven transports become unsafe, necessitating capstan-based or sprocketless scanning with gentle tension profiles.

  • Short Passes: Frequent breaks to relax tension.
  • Wet-Gate: Can reduce friction and hide base scratches, but compatibility must be tested.
  • Stabilization: Software stabilization compensates for weave induced by shrinkage.
  • High-Res Capture: Extra pixels help reconstruct edge detail lost to deformation.

Documentation and Aftercare

Maintain condition reports, humidity/temperature logs, and post-scan rehousing. If only one pass is feasible, prioritize a conservative capture of maximum information (16-bit log) over creative grading.
