True-peak metering is an audio metering standard that measures the highest instantaneous peaks in a digital audio signal, accounting for inter-sample peaks that traditional sample-peak meters may miss. By anticipating filter and codec behavior, true-peak meters prevent distortion and clipping in final film mixes and broadcasts.

Introduced by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in its BS.1770 and BS.2187 recommendations in the 2010s, true-peak metering addressed the shortcomings of legacy peak meters as digital distribution and streaming platforms became ubiquitous. It ensures compliance with loudness normalization standards and preserves dynamic integrity.

Technical Implementation

True-peak meters use oversampling (commonly 4× to 8×) to reconstruct the analog waveform between digital samples. The meter applies an anti-aliasing filter and calculates the predicted analog peak, displaying levels in dBTP (decibels true-peak). This process flags potential inter-sample overs, guiding engineers to adjust limiting and gain staging.

Applications and Best Practices

In film sound mixing, true-peak metering is critical during final mastering and delivery. Engineers set true-peak targets (e.g., –1.0 dBTP) to avoid codec distortion on streaming platforms, theatrical playback, and broadcast.
