Beyond the Box Office: Measuring Total Impact

A sustainability report is a comprehensive document that provides transparency on a company’s operations and impact beyond its financial performance. In the film industry, major studios like Disney, Netflix, and Comcast (parent of NBCUniversal) publish these reports annually to communicate their efforts and progress in key areas of corporate responsibility. The report is typically structured around the three pillars of ESG:

• Environmental: This section details the company’s efforts to minimize its physical footprint. For a film studio, this includes data on greenhouse gas emissions from productions and facilities, energy consumption, water usage, and waste management programs like set recycling.
• Social: This pillar focuses on the company’s relationships with its employees, talent, and the community. It includes metrics and initiatives related to diversity and inclusion (both on-screen and behind the camera), crew welfare and safety, and community outreach programs.
• Governance: This covers the internal policies and controls of the company, detailing ethical business practices, board oversight of sustainability issues, and data privacy.

Drivers and Criticisms

The push for detailed sustainability reporting in the film industry is driven by several factors, including pressure from investors who see ESG performance as an indicator of long-term health, a desire to attract talent that wants to work for socially responsible companies, and the need to build a positive brand reputation with audiences. However, the practice is also subject to criticism, with watchdog groups often scrutinizing these reports for signs of ‘greenwashing’—the selective disclosure of positive data to present a misleadingly eco-friendly or socially responsible image without substantive action.
