The Universe of the Narrative

The Story World, or Diegesis, is the broadest term for the universe a story inhabits. It is far more than just the physical setting; it is the total reality of the film, including all the elements that are seen and unseen by the audience. This includes the world’s geography and locations, its time period, its specific laws of physics or magic, its political systems, its social hierarchies, its cultural customs, and its established history. A well-realized Story World feels like a real place that existed before the film began and will continue to exist after it ends.

Every story has a world. For a contemporary drama, the Story World may be identical to our own. For a science fiction or fantasy film, the Story World may be radically different, requiring the filmmaker to establish its unique rules and properties for the audience. The consistency and coherence of this world are paramount. If the Story World has a rule (e.g., ‘vampires cannot enter a home uninvited’), the narrative must adhere to that rule for the world to remain believable and for the stakes to feel real. A strong Story World makes a narrative immersive, providing a rich context that shapes the characters and their conflicts.

Story World vs. Setting vs. Location

These terms describe the ‘where and when’ of a story on different scales, from the macro to the micro.

Location	Micro (The Specific Place)	The actual, physical place where a single scene happens.	The Prancing Pony inn in Bree, the Mines of Moria, the summit of Weathertop. These are the tangible locations where the action takes place.
