An Unwritten Rule of Internet Etiquette

In the age of social media and instantaneous global communication, a ‘spoiler alert’ has become a crucial piece of online etiquette. It serves as a digital curtain, allowing fans to discuss a new movie or TV show openly while protecting the experience for those who haven’t had a chance to see it yet. A ‘spoiler’ is any piece of information that reveals a significant and surprising plot development, such as a major character’s death, a surprise twist ending, or the identity of a mysterious villain.

Giving a spoiler alert—often by writing the phrase itself, followed by a gap or a content warning tag—is a common courtesy that acknowledges that the element of surprise is a valuable part of the viewing experience for many people.

Spoiler Culture and the Film Industry

The widespread fear of spoilers has created a ‘spoiler culture’ that studios actively participate in and attempt to manage:

• Marketing Campaigns: Studios often build their marketing around secrecy. For Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios launched a major campaign with the hashtag #DontSpoilTheEndgame, imploring early viewers to keep the film’s secrets so others could enjoy the surprises. This strategy also serves to build hype and a sense of urgency to see the film immediately.
• Press Embargoes: When a film is shown to critics and journalists before its public release, it is almost always under a ‘spoiler embargo’. This is a formal agreement that a review can be published, but it cannot mention specific plot points until after the film is released to the general public.
• The Unofficial Statute of Limitations: There is a general, unwritten social contract regarding spoilers. For the first week or two after a major film’s release, revealing spoilers is widely considered a faux pas. As time goes on, however, the film’s plot points become part of the general cultural conversation, and the expectation of a warning diminishes. Discussing that Darth Vader is Luke’s father today would not require a spoiler alert, but in 1980, it was one of the most closely guarded secrets in cinema.
