The Canon in Your Head

The term ‘headcanon’ is a portmanteau of ‘head’ and ‘canon’ (the official, authoritative material of a story). It refers to the personal truths a fan establishes for themselves to enrich their experience of a film or franchise. Headcanon is the set of ideas, backstories, and interpretations that exist solely in a fan’s mind but are, for them, a perfectly valid part of the story’s universe. It is a way of personalizing a film and making its world feel more complete.

The Function of Headcanon

Fans create headcanons for a variety of reasons, often to fill in perceived gaps or enhance their connection to the characters:

• Filling in the Blanks: A character’s past might be a complete mystery in the film. A fan might develop a detailed headcanon about their family life, education, or past traumas to make their present-day actions feel more motivated and psychologically sound.
• Reconciling Plot Holes: If a film series has continuity errors or plot holes, fans will often create intricate headcanons to explain away the inconsistencies, thereby preserving their immersion in the world.
• Deepening Relationships: A headcanon can add unspoken layers to character relationships. A fan might have a headcanon that two characters who are friends on screen have a long-running inside joke or a shared childhood memory that informs all of their interactions.
• Representation and Identity: Headcanon is a powerful tool for fans to see themselves in media. A fan might develop a headcanon that a certain character is queer, autistic, or shares their cultural background, based on subtle coding or interpretation of the character’s behavior. This allows fans from marginalized groups to connect more deeply with stories where explicit representation may be lacking.

Headcanon vs. Fanon

Headcanon is, by definition, personal. However, when a particular headcanon becomes so popular and widely accepted within a fandom that it is treated as a shared, communal truth, it can evolve into fanon (fan-made canon). Fanon is the set of unofficial facts and interpretations that ‘everyone in the fandom just knows’, even though it never appeared on screen.
