A Foundation for Film Comedy
A sketch show, or sketch comedy show, is a program composed of multiple short, self-contained comedic scenes or vignettes, known as “sketches.” These sketches often feature a recurring cast of comedic actors playing different characters in various scenarios. While primarily a television format, the sketch show has an incredibly deep and symbiotic relationship with the world of cinema.
This relationship functions in two primary ways: firstly, as an incubator for comedic talent that later dominates the film industry, and secondly, as a structural basis for a specific subgenre of comedy films.
The Sketch Show as a Talent Incubator
Historically, sketch comedy has been one of the most important training grounds for comedic actors, writers, and directors who go on to have major careers in feature films. These shows provide a high-pressure, collaborative environment where performers can hone their skills in character creation, comedic timing, and improvisation.
- Saturday Night Live (SNL): The most famous example in North America, SNL has been a direct pipeline to Hollywood stardom for decades, launching the film careers of countless performers like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and Kristen Wiig.
- Monty Python’s Flying Circus: The surreal and groundbreaking British sketch show led directly to the troupe creating some of the most celebrated comedy films of all time, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) and Life of Brian (1979).
- Key & Peele: The acclaimed sketch show starring Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele showcased their immense talent and sharp social commentary. Jordan Peele would go on to become a celebrated, Oscar-winning writer and director of horror films like Get Out and Us.
The Sketch Movie Genre
Beyond developing talent, the format has also been adapted directly into feature films. A “sketch movie” is a film composed of a series of short, often unrelated segments, linked together by a loose theme or framing device. This non-linear structure allows for a rapid-fire comedic experience, unbound by the conventions of a single narrative. Examples include The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), Amazon Women on the Moon (1987), and Movie 43 (2013).
