Urban fantasy has developed a distinct set of tropes and aesthetics by modernizing classic fantasy elements:

• The Hidden World: In most urban fantasy narratives, the magical community exists as a secret society, hidden from the eyes of ordinary humans (often called “mundanes” or a similar term). A common plot involves a protagonist from the normal world discovering this hidden reality.
• Modernized Mythology: Traditional fantasy beings are adapted for contemporary life. Vampires might run corporations, werewolves might operate as biker gangs, and elves could be eco-terrorists. Magic and technology often coexist and interact in interesting ways.
• Noir and Procedural Influence: Many urban fantasy stories are structured as detective or crime noirs. The protagonist is often a cynical private investigator, a cop, or a magical enforcer tasked with policing the supernatural community and solving magical crimes.
• Gritty Aesthetic: The genre often embraces the grit and decay of the urban environment, contrasting the gleam of magic with rain-slicked streets, dark alleyways, and industrial decay.

• Bright (2017): A clear-cut example that places fantastical races like orcs and elves into the structure of a modern-day LAPD police procedural.
• Underworld franchise (2003-): Depicts a centuries-long secret war between aristocratic vampires and urban Lycans (werewolves), fought with modern weaponry in a dark, gothic cityscape.
