If a world contains talking animals and flying carpets, it can certainly accommodate characters expressing their deepest emotions through music. The spectacle of fantasy and the spectacle of the musical number complement each other perfectly, creating a heightened reality where anything is possible.

In this genre, music is often more than just emotional expression; it can be an integral part of the world’s magic and mythology. Songs can be used to cast spells, narrate legends, reveal prophecies, or even serve as the source of a character’s power. The ‘I Want’ song, a staple of musicals, is particularly effective in fantasy, as it allows a protagonist to clearly articulate their dreams and set the stage for their epic journey.

A Genre Dominated by Animation

Historically, the musical fantasy has been the undisputed domain of animated film, most notably the canon of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Disney established a powerful and enduring formula that blended fairy tales with memorable songs. This tradition was revitalized during the Disney Renaissance of the late 1980s and 1990s with films like The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Aladdin (1992), and continues to be a dominant force with modern hits like Frozen (2013) and Moana (2016).

Despite this, there are iconic live-action examples that have left an indelible mark on cinema history. The Wizard of Oz (1939) is arguably the foundational text for the live-action musical fantasy, seamlessly integrating its songs into its fantastical journey to the Emerald City. Other notable live-action films in this genre include Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Enchanted (2007), the latter of which lovingly satirizes the very Disney tropes it belongs to.
