The narrative gaze is shifted; the monster is not an object of terror but an object of desire. This subversion is a key part of the genre’s appeal. The stories frequently explore themes of power dynamics, consent, and finding agency through an unconventional relationship. The ‘horror’ element is redirected away from the monster and towards the intolerant society that threatens the central couple’s happiness, asking the audience to reconsider who the real monsters are.
