A comedy roast is a specific and often brutal form of comedic tribute. The modern format was popularized by the New York Friars Club and later brought to a mainstream audience by television programs like the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast and, more recently, the Comedy Central Roast series.

These are highly produced, feature-length events with a dais of celebrity roasters and a live audience. They are a showcase for a very specific, aggressive style of joke-writing and performance. Many of the roasters and roastees are film stars, further connecting this format to the broader movie industry.
- As a Narrative Device in Films: The roast format is a common scene in comedy films. It can be used to showcase the dynamic within a group of friends, where they show their affection for one another through relentless teasing. It can also be a setup for a dramatic or cringe-comedy set piece. A wedding reception speech, a bachelor party, or a retirement dinner can quickly turn into an impromptu roast, often with hilarious or disastrous consequences that drive the film’s plot. The scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) where the main characters trade increasingly creative insults is a classic example of this dynamic at play.
