Shuttle Drive

A shuttle drive is a dedicated portable hard drive used to physically transport a backup copy of a day's footage from the filming location to a separate, secure off-site location like a post-production facility.


Fulfilling the 3-2-1 Backup Rule

The gold standard for data security in any field, including filmmaking, is the 3-2-1 backup rule. This principle states that you should have at least:

  • 3 copies of your data.
  • On 2 different types of media or devices.
  • With 1 copy stored off-site.

The shuttle drive is the key component for fulfilling that critical third step. Its sole purpose is to create geographical separation between backup copies as quickly as possible, thereby protecting the production’s data from a single-location catastrophe like a fire, flood, or theft.

The Daily Data Workflow

At the end of each shooting day, the on-set Data Wrangler or DIT follows a strict protocol:

  1. All footage from the camera cards is offloaded and verified onto the primary production drive, which is typically a large RAID array that stays with the DIT.
  2. At the same time, a second or third copy of all the day’s footage is created on a separate, portable hard drive—the shuttle drive.
  3. This shuttle drive is then physically handed off to a designated person (often a production assistant or a professional courier) to be ‘shuttled’ away from the set.

Its destination is typically the post-production house where the editor is working, a visual effects vendor, or simply a secure, separate location. When the shuttle drive arrives, its contents are ingested, creating yet another copy of the data. This daily ritual ensures that even if all the on-set drives were to be lost or destroyed overnight, no more than a single day’s work would be at risk.

Characteristics of a Good Shuttle Drive

Given their purpose, shuttle drives are typically chosen for their durability and speed. They are often ruggedized, weather-sealed drives designed to withstand drops and vibration. With modern file sizes, high-speed solid-state drives (SSDs) are increasingly used to accelerate both the on-set copying process and the data ingest at the destination.
