AS-11

A broadcast archive format for exchanging finished programs between broadcasters.

Definition

AS-11 is a suite of SMPTE and EBU standards defining file-based formats for interchange of finished broadcast programs. It specifies the container formats, essence encodings and metadata requirements aimed at harmonizing content delivery across television networks, archives and digital platforms.

Origins and Development

Developed collaboratively by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), AS-11 emerged in the late 2010s to replace tape-based workflows. The initial specification—AS-11 UK DPP, tailored for the UK’s Digital Production Partnership—was followed by regional variants (AS-11 ADR for Australia, AS-11 NA for North America) and a global Generic variant, ensuring compatibility across territories.

Structure and Components

AS-11 organizes content into MXF OP1a packages with strict profile conformance:

  • Video Essence: XDCAM (MPEG-2 at 35 Mbps) or AVC-Intra (50–100 Mbps) depending on regional requirements.
  • Audio Essence: Uncompressed PCM (48 kHz, 16- or 24-bit) with multiple tracks for stereo, surround or descriptive audio.
  • Metadata: Descriptive fields (title, synopsis), technical parameters (aspect ratio, frame rate) and compliance markers (HDR flags, closed captions presence).

EBUCore-based metadata schemas ensure interoperability and automated ingest.

Workflow and Use Cases

Broadcasters receive AS-11 packages via file transfer, ingesting them directly into playout servers without transcoding. Metadata enables automated scheduling, subtitling insertion and compliance checks. Archives leverage AS-11’s standardized structure for long-term preservation, facilitating searchability and future re-packaging.

Industry Impact and Future Directions

AS-11 has catalyzed the transition to file-based broadcast infrastructures, reducing tape handling costs and error rates. As UHD and HDR become mainstream, AS-11 profiles are being extended to include HEVC encoding, HDR10 metadata and immersive audio formats—ensuring that broadcasters can adopt next-generation technologies within a familiar interchange framework. The ongoing harmonization of AS-11 variants promises a truly global standard for program exchange, minimizing regional friction and fostering a more agile media ecosystem.
