Rec. 709

Rec. 709 is the international technical standard that defines the color space and signal characteristics for high-definition (HD) television.


The Color of High Definition

ITU-R Recommendation BT.709, universally known as Rec. 709, is a landmark standard in the history of video technology. Released by the International Telecommunication Union, it defines the parameters for high-definition (HD) video, including frame rates, pixel resolution (1920x1080), and, most importantly, the color space. A color space, or gamut, is the specific range of colors that a system can produce or record. Rec. 709 established a precise, universal palette for the HD era.

The Standardized Palette

For decades, Rec. 709 was the undisputed king of color. Every piece of HD content—from broadcast television shows and Hollywood Blu-rays to the videos on YouTube and Vimeo—was color-graded and mastered to look correct within the Rec. 709 color space. All consumer HDTVs, computer monitors, and projectors were manufactured to display this specific gamut. This standardization was crucial because it ensured a consistent viewing experience; the colors a filmmaker saw in their professional editing suite would be faithfully reproduced on a consumer’s television at home.

While the Rec. 709 gamut is capable of producing billions of colors, it represents only a fraction (around 35.9%) of the full spectrum of colors visible to the human eye. With the advent of 4K UHD and HDR technology, Rec. 709 is now being succeeded by the much wider Rec. 2020 color space, but it remains the foundational standard for all legacy HD content.
