A pop-up event is a form of experiential and guerilla marketing where a brand creates a temporary physical installation that is only open for a short period—from a few hours to a few weeks. The ephemeral nature of the pop-up is its key strength, creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity that drives immediate foot traffic and online conversation. For film studios, these events are a powerful way to bring the world of a movie to life and create a memorable, interactive experience for fans.

The goal is to design an environment that is highly “Instagrammable,” encouraging attendees to take photos and videos and share them on social media. This turns every visitor into a potential brand ambassador, amplifying the event’s reach far beyond its physical location. These pop-ups are often timed to coincide with a film’s premiere week or a major fan convention like San Diego Comic-Con.

Bringing Fictional Worlds to Life

Some of the most effective film promotions have involved elaborate pop-up events that immerse fans in the movie’s world:

• For Blade Runner 2049, Warner Bros. recreated a street from the film’s dystopian Los Angeles, complete with futuristic vehicles, costumed actors, and a noodle bar, allowing Comic-Con attendees to step directly into the movie’s environment.
• To promote the TV series Better Call Saul, a pop-up of the fictional fast-food restaurant Los Pollos Hermanos (from the show’s predecessor, Breaking Bad) appeared in several cities, serving curly fries and generating huge lines and media coverage.
• For the release of Twin Peaks: The Return, Showtime launched a pop-up of the iconic Double R Diner in Los Angeles, allowing fans to sit in the familiar red booths and enjoy a slice of cherry pie and a “damn good cup o’ coffee.”
