The Sustainability Supervisor on Set

A film production is a resource-intensive operation that can generate a significant carbon footprint. The role of the ‘green producer’—also known as an eco-supervisor, sustainability manager, or eco-consultant—is a relatively new but increasingly vital position dedicated to making the filmmaking process more environmentally responsible. This person works alongside the producers and heads of department to integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of the production.

Core Responsibilities and Initiatives

The green producer’s job is to create and execute a comprehensive sustainability plan for the film. Their focus is on tangible, measurable actions:

• Waste Reduction: Implementing robust on-set recycling and composting systems, eliminating single-use plastics by distributing reusable water bottles and coffee cups, and donating leftover food and set materials.
• Energy Management: Advocating for and sourcing alternatives to traditional diesel generators, such as portable battery stations or connecting to the main power grid. They also encourage the use of energy-efficient LED lighting.
• Sustainable Sourcing: Working with the art and construction departments to use sustainably sourced, recycled, or reclaimed materials for set building, and ensuring sets are designed for disassembly and reuse.
• Carbon Tracking: The most critical duty is often to meticulously track the production’s carbon emissions using a carbon calculator. This data is used to measure the effectiveness of the sustainability initiatives and is required to achieve official green production certifications, such as the Albert Certification.
