Higher-Order Ambisonics is a full-sphere surround sound format that captures and recreates a complete 360-degree soundfield, independent of any specific speaker layout.
Higher-Order Ambisonics (HOA) represents a fundamentally different philosophy of spatial audio compared to channel-based or object-based formats. Instead of trying to place sounds in specific speaker locations (channels) or as discrete points in space (objects), Ambisonics captures a holistic, mathematical representation of the entire soundfield at a single point. The most basic form, First-Order Ambisonics (FOA), uses four channels of audio (called B-format) to encode this information. HOA dramatically increases the spatial accuracy and resolution by using more channels—from nine (2nd order) to 16 (3rd order) and beyond. This creates a much more detailed and stable 3D audio image. The key takeaway is that an HOA file does not contain a ‘mix’ for a speaker system; it contains a description of the soundfield itself.
The greatest strength of HOA is its complete independence from any particular speaker layout. The encoded HOA signal is a ‘scene-based’ representation, not a ‘speaker-based’ one. To listen to it, a special decoder is required. This decoder takes the HOA data and renders it in real-time for the specific speaker setup being used. The same HOA file can be decoded for stereo headphones (creating a binaural output), a standard 7.1 surround system, or a complex, multi-speaker dome installation. This makes HOA an incredibly flexible and future-proof format, as the master audio file does not need to be remixed for different playback environments.
While object-based audio like Dolby Atmos dominates the world of linear, cinematic content, HOA is the undisputed standard for interactive media, particularly virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 360-degree video. Because HOA captures the full sound sphere, it can be perfectly and seamlessly rotated to match a user’s head movements. When you turn your head in a VR experience, the Ambisonic decoder simply rotates the soundfield in the opposite direction, creating a stable and convincing audio world that is locked in place. This is critical for presence and immersion and is something that channel-based or object-based audio struggles to do as naturally. Many modern game engines and audio middleware have native support for HOA for rendering realistic ambient environments.
