Pixel Tube

A pixel tube is a modern, tube-shaped LED lighting fixture where individual sections, or pixels, can be controlled independently for color, intensity, and effects.


The Evolution of Tube Lighting

The tube light has been a staple of film sets for decades, primarily in the form of fluorescent fixtures like the Kino Flo. These were prized for their soft, linear output, perfect for use as key lights or for illuminating backgrounds. The first revolution came with the switch to LED technology, which allowed for bi-color (tungsten and daylight) capabilities and dimming without color shift. The pixel tube represents the next, and perhaps most significant, leap forward. Instead of the entire tube being a single, uniform light source, it is composed of a linear array of tiny light engines—‘pixels’—each of which can be individually addressed and controlled. This transforms the humble tube from a simple illuminator into a dynamic, animated canvas of light.

Anatomy of a Pixel Tube

A modern pixel tube is a dense package of technology. Inside the cylindrical diffusion housing is a strip of RGBWW or similar multi-diode LEDs. The ‘WW’ stands for warm white and cool white, dedicated diodes that allow the tube to produce high-quality white light across a vast CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) range, a critical feature that purely RGB lights struggle with. This ensures accurate skin tones and color rendering, measured by high CRI and TLCI ratings.

The granular control offered by pixel tubes has unlocked a vast range of creative possibilities, moving beyond simple illumination into the realm of practical, in-camera effects.

  • Dynamic Practicals: They can be placed within a scene as futuristic light fixtures, nightclub lighting, or sci-fi interface elements. A sequence of tubes in a corridor can be programmed with a chasing pattern to simulate a moving vehicle or an energy surge.
  • Reflective Lighting: They are often used off-camera to cast animated, colored light onto subjects or environments. For example, a pixel tube with a fire effect pattern can be used to create realistic, flickering light on an actor’s face, or a blue-and-red chase pattern can sell the effect of passing police cars.
  • Eye Lights and Accents: Their narrow profile allows them to be hidden in tight spaces to provide a splash of color or a specific highlight on a prop or character. They can even create complex, multi-colored eye-lights for stylized close-ups.
  • Light Painting: In long-exposure shots, a moving pixel tube can be used to ‘paint’ complex shapes and patterns of light directly into the frame.

This versatility has made them indispensable tools in music videos, commercials, and science fiction films like The Creator (2023), where they were used extensively to build the film’s futuristic aesthetic.
