The Lived Experience of Watching a Movie 🍿
While many schools of film theory focus on analyzing a film as an object—decoding its structure, its ideology, or its psychological subtext—phenomenology takes a different approach. Its central question is not ‘What does the film mean?’ but rather ‘What is it like to watch this film?’
Rooted in the work of philosophers like Edmund Husserl and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, film phenomenology studies the direct, ‘lived experience’ of film spectatorship. It is concerned with the pre-reflective, visceral encounter between the viewer’s consciousness and the sights and sounds on the screen.
Key Concepts in Film Phenomenology
- Embodied Spectatorship: This is the core concept. Phenomenology rejects the idea of the viewer as a disembodied mind or a passive ‘eyeball.’ It argues that we watch films with our entire bodies. Our muscles tense during a suspenseful scene; we feel a kinesthetic rush during a chase sequence; we can feel a physical sense of vertigo from a high-angle shot. The film ‘touches’ us, and our body responds.
- Perception and Consciousness: The theory analyzes how the film’s formal properties—camerawork, editing, sound design—directly shape our perception of time, space, and movement. It explores how a film can create a tangible ‘world’ that we feel we inhabit for a short time.
- The Film as a ‘Being’: Leading film phenomenologist Vivian Sobchack argues that a film has its own form of perceptual consciousness. The camera’s ‘gaze,’ the editing’s ‘thought process’—these are expressions of the film’s own way of being in and seeing the world, which our own consciousness engages with.
