Photochemical Preservation

Photochemical Preservation is the traditional method of archiving and protecting motion picture heritage by creating new, stable film elements through photographic and chemical processes rather than digital means.


The Analog Path to Permanence

In an age dominated by digital data, Photochemical Preservation remains a cornerstone of serious film archival practice. It is the time-tested, analog method of ensuring a film’s long-term survival by creating new, high-quality film copies from original elements. This process operates on the principle that a physical film element, stored under proper conditions, is a highly stable and proven archival medium with a potential lifespan of centuries—a claim that cannot yet be made for any digital format, which remains vulnerable to data rot, file format obsolescence, and hardware failures.

The Preservation Chain

The primary goal of photochemical preservation is to protect the fragile and irreplaceable Original Camera Negative (OCN)—the actual film that was in the camera during shooting. Because repeated use for making prints would damage the OCN, archivists create a series of intermediate elements to serve as a new preservation master.

The traditional workflow involves creating:

  1. Interpositive (IP): A high-quality, fine-grain positive print made directly from the OCN. The IP is a crucial intermediate step. It has a low-contrast image and is made on a special, highly stable black-and-white film stock, even for color films. For color preservation, three separate black-and-white IPs are made, one for each primary color (red, green, and blue). These are known as ‘YCM separation masters.’
  2. Internegative (IN): A new negative created from the Interpositive. This IN becomes the new printing negative from which new exhibition prints can be made without ever touching the original camera negative again.

By creating these elements, an archive ensures that even if the original negative is lost or decays, a high-resolution source exists from which the film can be accurately reproduced in the future.

The Importance of Film Stock

The history of photochemical preservation is also a history of the film stocks themselves.

The Enduring Relevance

While digital restoration offers incredible tools for cleaning and repairing films, the final output is often a set of digital files on a hard drive. For true long-term preservation, many archives consider the job incomplete until a new polyester 35mm negative and print have been created from the digital restoration. This ‘film-out’ process ensures that a human-readable, physically robust copy of the restored work exists, safeguarding it against the uncertainties of the digital future. It is the ultimate backup, tethering the restored film back to the physical medium on which it was born.
