A First Look at the Animation
A pencil test is a fundamental step in the 2D animation process that allows animators and directors to review and refine an animated sequence before it enters the more costly and labor-intensive stages of production (like clean-up, ink-and-paint, and final compositing). It is, in essence, a draft of the animation, used to check the most important element: the performance itself.
Pencil Test: The Process
Traditionally, once an animator completed the rough pencil drawings for a scene (both the keyframes and the inbetweens), each drawing would be photographed one by one on a rostrum camera. This sequence of still photographs would then be developed and projected as a moving image. In modern 2D animation workflows, this process is much faster; the pencil drawings are quickly scanned into a computer and sequenced in an editing program.
The Purpose of the Test
The primary goal of a pencil test is to evaluate the animation’s core principles:
- Timing: Does the action feel too fast or too slow? Is the comedic timing of a gag working?
- Spacing: Is the movement smooth and believable? Does the character accelerate and decelerate correctly?
- Posing and Acting: Is the character’s performance clear and emotionally resonant? Are the poses strong and well-defined?
By reviewing the pencil test, the director can give notes to the animator, who can then make changes to the drawings while they are still in a rough, easily editable form. This iterative process of testing and refining is crucial for achieving high-quality animation.
