A Disguise server is an industry-standard media server platform used to manage and play back video content for large-scale displays like LED walls.

A Disguise server is a high-performance, integrated hardware and software system that acts as the master controller for complex video playback scenarios. While a game engine like Unreal Engine creates the real-time 3D content for an In-Camera VFX (ICVFX) shoot, the Disguise platform is the crucial layer that takes that content and ensures it is displayed perfectly and seamlessly across the hundreds of individual LED panels that make up an LED Volume.

Core Functions in ICVFX

In a virtual production environment, Disguise servers (and their accompanying software) are responsible for a number of critical tasks:

  • Content Mapping and Playback: It takes the massive, high-resolution video feed from the render engine and precisely maps which part of the image goes to which specific LED panel on the stage.
  • Color Calibration: It manages the color pipeline, ensuring that all the LED panels are perfectly color-matched to each other and, most importantly, to what the cinema camera is seeing. This creates a consistent and seamless world.
  • Synchronization: It works in concert with the Genlock signal to ensure that the playback on every single screen is perfectly synchronized, preventing any visual tearing or artifacts.
  • Integration: It acts as a central hub, integrating the inputs from the game engine, the camera tracking system, and other on-set controllers into a single, manageable workflow.
