The Modern Digital Film Laboratory
In the era of celluloid, a production would send its exposed film negative to a physical film lab each night for chemical processing and the creation of prints. In the modern digital era, this role is filled by the data lab. It is the central hub for a production’s entire data workflow, responsible for the secure management of every file generated on set.
A data lab can be a dedicated brick-and-mortar post-production facility, or it can be a near-set lab built in a mobile trailer or a nearby office. Its core function is to be the first point of contact for the original camera files after they leave the set.
Key Functions of a Data Lab
- Secure Ingest and Backup: The lab receives the physical camera cards or shuttle drives from the set. The data is ‘ingested’ (copied) using a process that includes checksum verification to ensure a perfect, bit-for-bit copy. The lab then creates multiple redundant backups according to the 3-2-1 rule, often including a long-term archive copy on LTO tape.
- Creation of Dailies: The lab takes the high-resolution, data-heavy original camera files and processes them to create smaller, more manageable proxy files known as ‘dailies’ or ‘rushes.’
- Color and Sync: During this process, a dailies colorist will apply a preliminary color grade to the footage (often based on a look created by the cinematographer) and sync the video with the separate audio files recorded on set.
- Secure Distribution: The final, color-corrected and synced dailies are uploaded to a secure cloud-based viewing platform (like Frame.io or Moxion), allowing the director, producers, editor, and other key creatives to review the previous day’s work from anywhere in the world.
