A discovery feed is a user interface paradigm, defined by an endless, algorithmically curated vertical stream of content, designed for passive consumption.
The discovery feed is the user interface that has come to dominate modern social media and entertainment apps. The archetypal example is the TikTok ‘For You’ Page, but the model has been adopted by nearly every major platform, including Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. It is characterized by a full-screen, vertically scrolling, sound-on experience where the algorithm, not the user, decides what content comes next.
This represents a fundamental shift from active choice (browsing a grid of thumbnails) to passive discovery (being fed a continuous stream). The user’s primary interaction is simply to swipe up to dismiss the current video and be instantly served the next.
The discovery feed’s algorithm learns a user’s preferences with incredible speed and accuracy. It tracks micro-signals of engagement: how many seconds a user watches a video before swiping, whether they watch it multiple times, and if they like, comment, or share. This makes the feed an incredibly powerful tool for content promotion.
Movie marketers are increasingly creating bespoke assets—vertical trailer cutdowns, behind-the-scenes clips, cast interviews—specifically for this format. A movie-related clip that goes viral on a discovery feed can achieve massive organic reach, particularly with younger demographics who spend a significant portion of their screen time within these feeds. It has become an essential, and often primary, channel for building awareness and cultural relevance for a new film.
