GhostFrame

Technique that interleaves multiple images or exposures in one LED refresh cycle to serve different cameras.


Overview

This display and camera-sync method hides multiple image streams within the high-frequency refresh of an LED wall so different cameras “see” different backgrounds or tracking markers simultaneously. It enables multi-angle shooting without relighting the stage or swapping plates between takes.

How It Works on Set

The LED processor multiplexes content—e.g., A-camera sees plate A plus markers, B-camera sees plate B without markers—using shutter-phase coordination. Each camera is genlocked and timed so its exposure captures only the intended subframes. Operators can also ghost matte patterns for keying or color charts for calibration without them appearing to the naked eye.

Creative and Operational Use Cases

  • Multicam interviews with distinct parallax backgrounds.
  • Driving scenes where windshield reflections differ per angle.
  • Invisible tracking or talent eyeline marks present only to one viewpoint.

Risks and Mitigation

Mismatched shutter angles, rolling-shutter artifacts, or latency drift reveal flicker or unintended overlays. Crews must validate phase relationships per lens and frame rate, and keep contingency plates ready if a camera’s exposure window changes during a speed ramp.
