Kino Flo

Kino Flo is a groundbreaking brand of fluorescent lighting fixtures developed for film production, celebrated for their signature soft, flattering light and high color accuracy.

The Soft Light Revolution 💡

Before the advent of Kino Flo in the late 1980s, creating a large, soft light source on set was a cumbersome and inefficient process. Cinematographers had to use powerful, hot tungsten lights and punch them through large frames of heavy diffusion fabric. Standard industrial fluorescent tubes were not an option, as they had poor color rendering—often with a distinct green spike—and flickered on camera.

Kino Flo revolutionized on-set lighting by solving these problems. The company engineered a complete system consisting of lightweight fixtures and, most importantly, proprietary fluorescent tubes with high-quality phosphors. These tubes were the first of their kind to have a high Color Rendering Index (CRI), meaning they could accurately reproduce colors and skin tones. They were also high-frequency and flicker-free by design.

The ‘Kino Look’ and Its Applications

The Kino Flo system, especially the iconic 4-foot 4Bank fixture, quickly became an industry staple. The ‘Kino look’ is a beautiful, soft, and diffuse quality of light that wraps gently around a subject, creating pleasing, open shadows. This made them indispensable for a variety of applications:

  • Interviews: They became the go-to key light for interviews, providing a flattering light on the face.
  • Fill Light: Their broad, soft output is perfect for filling in shadows created by a harder key light.
  • Tight Spaces: Because the fixtures are slim and produce very little heat, they are ideal for lighting actors in confined spaces like car interiors or small rooms.
  • Color Matching: Kino Flo tubes were produced in both Tungsten (3200K) and Daylight (5600K) balances, allowing them to be easily integrated with other professional lighting sources.

Evolution to LED

While Kino Flo built its reputation on its high-end fluorescent technology, the company has fully embraced the transition to LED. Modern Kino Flo fixtures, such as the Celeb and FreeStyle lines, are advanced LED panels that offer the same signature soft light quality but with the added benefits of full-color tunability, dimming, and greater efficiency. The brand remains synonymous with high-quality soft lighting for motion pictures.
