Hue vs Saturation Curve

The Hue vs. Saturation curve is a color grading tool that allows a colorist to selectively increase or decrease the saturation of a specific range of colors within an image.


Surgical Saturation Control

The Hue vs. Saturation curve is a powerful secondary color correction tool that provides surgical control over the color intensity within an image. While a simple ‘Saturation’ knob adjusts all the colors in the image at once, the Hue vs. Saturation curve allows a colorist to create a custom relationship between a color’s hue and its saturation level. This enables precise enhancements and corrections that would be impossible with global controls, leading to a more nuanced and polished final image.

The Interface and Workflow

The tool is typically represented as a graph:

  • The Horizontal Axis (X-axis) displays the entire spectrum of hues—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, and back to red.
  • The Vertical Axis (Y-axis) represents the level of saturation. The center line is ‘zero change.’ Moving a point on the curve up increases saturation, and moving it down decreases saturation.

The workflow is intuitive. A colorist can either click on the curve in the color range they want to affect (e.g., the blue part of the spectrum) and drag it, or they can use an eyedropper tool to click directly on a color in the image itself (e.g., a blue sky). The software will automatically select the corresponding hue on the curve. By adding control points and adjusting the curve, the colorist can precisely define which colors are affected and how broad or narrow the adjustment should be.

Creative and Corrective Applications

This tool is a workhorse in any color grading session, used for a wide variety of tasks:

  • Enhancing Key Colors: The most common use is to boost the saturation of a specific color to make it more vibrant and draw the viewer’s eye. For example, making a green forest more lush and vibrant, or making a blue sky deeper and richer, all without making the actors’ skin tones look unnaturally red or orange.
  • Toning Down Distractions: Conversely, it’s an excellent tool for fixing problems. If a shot contains a distracting, brightly colored object in the background (like a neon sign or a brightly colored car), the colorist can use the curve to specifically desaturate that object’s color, making it less noticeable without affecting the rest of the scene.
  • Stylistic Effects: The tool can be used to create highly stylized looks. By desaturating all colors except for one (e.g., keeping reds saturated while making everything else black and white), a colorist can achieve the classic ‘Sin City’ effect.
  • Matching Colors: If the color of an actor’s wardrobe appears slightly different between two shots, the Hue vs. Saturation curve can be used to precisely match the saturation level of the clothing to ensure continuity.
